🌟 Week Commencing 5th January 2026 🌟
Firstly, Happy New Year! 🎊 We hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and are feeling refreshed and ready for an exciting year ahead. What an amazing first week of 2026 it has been! 😊
📖 English
To kick off the new year, we have started reading our brand-new class novel, The Firework Maker’s Daughter 🎆. We explored the author, Philip Pullman, and made notes about his life. We were shocked to discover that he has been awarded a knighthood by the Queen!
To support our writing skills, we have continued learning about subordinate clauses, helping us make our writing more interesting and detailed.
➕ Maths
In Maths, we began our work on subtraction, using Dienes and place value charts to support our understanding. Using our key question, “What do you notice?”, we explored how to subtract mentally using place value skills.
When subtracting 9, we practised subtracting 10 and then adding 1 back. Mrs Broda-Kaye was amazed by the fantastic number line we created to help explain our thinking!
🪨 Science
Our Science focus this term is rocks! We learned about scientists who study rocks and discovered they are called geologists . We then used our geology skills to observe, compare, and describe different types of rocks.
🌍 Geography
In Geography, we have started learning about rivers. We discussed why people settle near rivers and how this has been important throughout history. We also learned about river features such as the source, tributaries, meanders, and river mouth.
Did you know? All rivers either join another river, connect to a lake, or flow into the sea or ocean
🏰 History
Our new History topic is the Anglo-Saxons ⚔️. We explored what happened after the Romans left Britain and how different tribes invaded the country. The Angles, Saxons, and Jutes were the three main tribes, and England was eventually divided into kingdoms 👑.
We are really looking forward to learning more about this exciting topic!
