What a phenomenal week it’s been in Year 5! The classroom has been bursting with energy, imagination, and those brilliant “aha!” moments that make learning unforgettable.
✏️ English – Persuasion Power!
We launched our brand‑new writing objective with a bang! This week, we stepped into the shoes of wartime advertisers, crafting powerful evacuation posters designed to convince parents to send their children to the countryside. Armed with embedded clauses, confident modal verbs, and beautifully crafted subordinate clauses, the class produced writing that was bold, emotional, and incredibly persuasive. Meanwhile, in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, all four children are now deep inside Narnia — and the danger is rising. The tension in the classroom during reading time has been electric.
➗ Maths – Decimal Dynamo Week
Decimals didn’t stand a chance against Year 5! We’ve been mastering how to multiply decimals, using place value knowledge and clever strategies to crack even the trickiest problems. The determination and teamwork have been amazing to watch.
🌍 Geography – Exploring Cambridgeshire’s Cities
Our afternoons have been packed with discovery. We travelled (virtually!) across Cambridgeshire to compare its three incredible cities:
- Cambridge – the world‑famous university city, full of history and stunning colleges
- Ely – the beautiful cathedral city, rising proudly above the Fens
- Peterborough – a large, fast‑growing city with strong transport links and modern development
The children loved spotting the differences and discussing how geography shapes each city’s identity.
🏰 History – Meeting Napoleon
We kicked off our new topic by diving into the dramatic life of Napoleon Bonaparte. The class were hooked from the very first lesson — who was this ambitious leader, how did he rise to power, and what changes did he bring to France? The debates and questions were fantastic. Year 5 are already showing the makings of brilliant historians.
🐝 Science – Bumblebees vs. the Cuckoo!
Science this week was buzzing with excitement. We explored the life cycle of the bumblebee, discovering how these hardworking insects grow and support our environment.
Then came the twist: the cuckoo. The children were shocked (and slightly outraged!) to learn how this sneaky bird lays its eggs in other birds’ nests and never even meets its young. The comparisons sparked brilliant scientific thinking.
Another unforgettable week in Year 5 — full of curiosity, creativity, and big ideas. The enthusiasm in the classroom has been incredible. We can’t wait to see what adventures next week brings!
