Last week was another busy and brilliant one in Year 5, with lots of new skills and discoveries across our subjects.
English – Australian Writing & Clever Clauses
We continued working on our explanation texts about Australia, focusing on developing our use of semicolons, colons and embedded clauses. The children worked hard to make their writing more sophisticated, and it really showed in the quality of their sentences.
Maths – Fractions Begin
Fractions made their grand entrance this week. We explored the idea that a whole can be shown in different ways — for example, if a pizza is cut into 8 slices and none are eaten, the whole is 8/8. This simple idea helped us build confidence before moving on to trickier concepts.
Geography – The First Māori Journeys
In geography, we learned how the Māori first arrived in New Zealand. The children were fascinated by the long voyages across the Pacific and the incredible navigation skills needed to reach Aotearoa.
History – Richard Arkwright & the Water Frame
Our history lessons took us back to the Industrial Revolution, where we discovered how Richard Arkwright invented the water frame. We explored how this invention led to the rise of factories and changed the way people worked forever.
Science – Gravity
In science, we investigated gravity — what it is, how it works and why it keeps our feet firmly on the ground. The children enjoyed exploring how gravity affects objects of different sizes and masses.
