What a week it has been in Year 5. The classroom has been buzzing with creativity, curiosity and the occasional moment of “Wait… what?” as we’ve stretched our brains across a whole range of subjects.
English – Unique Voices, Brilliant Writing
We wrapped up our diverse and unique explanation texts all about Australia, and I have to say, the children absolutely blew me away. Their writing choices, vocabulary and structure showed real maturity. Some pieces wouldn’t look out of place in a real information book.
Whole Class Reading – Understanding Ade’s World
In our reading sessions, we learned more about Ade’s mum and her agoraphobia. The children showed real empathy as we explored how her condition affects Ade’s daily life. Their discussions were thoughtful, sensitive and full of insight.
Maths – Fractions: The Mind‑Bending Edition
Fractions took centre stage this week as we tackled converting between mixed numbers and improper fractions. At one point, our brains felt like they might explode, so we sensibly hit the reset button and revisited the basics. Cue the moment of shock when we realised how simple some of the concepts actually were. A true rollercoaster.
Afternoons – New Zealand, Tectonic Plates and Exploding Geysers
Our geography work whisked us across the world to New Zealand. We explored tectonic plates, earthquakes and volcanoes, and the children were fascinated by the power beneath our feet. Watching geysers erupt was a definite highlight — lots of “woah!” moments.
History – The Steam Engine Changes Everything
In history, we travelled back in time to learn about the steam engine and how it transformed public transport. The children were amazed at how one invention could reshape the way people lived, worked and travelled.
Science – A Journey Through Space
To finish the week, we rocketed into our science topic on space. The children had great fun exploring the planets, comparing their features and imagining what it would be like to visit each one.
