What a brilliant week we’ve had in Year 5! In English, the children have been hard at work crafting persuasive pieces based on the evacuation of children during World War II. They showed real maturity and empathy in their writing, and we were especially impressed with how confidently they used subordinate clauses, modal verbs and embedded clauses to strengthen their arguments.
In maths, we’ve continued developing our division skills. The class has been learning how to partition and exchange within the bus stop method, showing growing confidence and accuracy. During our Maths on Track sessions, pupils have also been sharpening their mental arithmetic, including clever strategies for multiplying numbers by 50.
Our afternoons have been full of excitement and curiosity. In history, the children have loved diving into the Battle of Trafalgar. They were fascinated to learn how Admiral Nelson led 26 British ships in parallel lines to defeat 33 French and Spanish allied ships. The class were captivated by the story of the battle, including the moment Nelson was shot and later died after witnessing Britain’s victory.
In geography, we’ve been exploring how Wisbech, Huntingdon and St Neots have developed over time. The children enjoyed discovering how Wisbech’s port once played a key role in trade, and how rivers were used to transport goods to market towns across the region.
Science brought hands-on excitement as we dissected flowers to identify and label their parts, deepening our understanding of the plant life cycle. The children approached the task with real curiosity and care.
To finish the week, art has produced some stunning charcoal and pastel drawings of bugs. The attention to detail and creativity on display has been wonderful to see.
